The Ace Hotel chain was founded in Seattle in 1999 and is conceived as a place where creative people can meet and find lodging. Most of its locations are in the USA. The Ace Hotel Kyoto, opened in June 2020, is the first hotel of its kind in Asia and impresses with its retro charm.
The Ace Hotel Kyoto was born as a project under the motto “East Meets West”. Renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma was commissioned with the architectural design of the hotel, with Commune Design from Los Angeles in charge of interior design. Just three minutes away from the National Museum of Modern Art, the hotel nestles at the heart of the historical city center.
Art is a constant theme throughout the entire hotel. For instance, all 213 rooms are decorated with unique pieces by Japanese artists. Additionally, all rooms have a Hi-Fi system, and some even feature a record deck and a guitar.
On the culinary front, guests can also sample a blend of local and western fare. The chefs offer delicacies from the region, the ingredients for which are selected on the markets of Kyoto and the neighboring prefectures. At the same time, guests can enjoy pizza and wine in an Italian osteria, tacos and cocktails in a lounge, or an espresso in a café.
The bathrooms are lined with stone and wooden tiles. The round shape of the built-in washbasins from Duravit’s Architec series blends perfectly into the overall aesthetic of the bathroom.
