In vino veritas: die Natur spüren

Seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and feeling: there is no place in which people are more in touch with their senses than in nature. The wine-making Longen-Schlöder family of Longuich got together with the architect and designer Matteo Thun, a native of South Tyrol, to see how they could bring these five senses to life for their guests. 20 vineyard cottages are nestled right in the middle of the orchards and vineyards on the hillsides overlooking the Mosel River – a unique refuge for wine and nature lovers.

Their idea: What better way to highlight the natural surroundings than with natural architecture? Utilising his environmentally friendly and authentic construction style and employing unprocessed materials, Matteo Thun put this philosophy into practice, including façades utilising local slate.

In addition to its use as a construction material, slate also serves as an outstanding medium for storing heat, as it absorbs the sun's energy during the day before releasing it to the vines during the night or on colder days. In conjunction with the slate's minerals, the stone gives rise to the ideal soil for an elegant Mosel Riesling.

Thanks to the careful use of local materials, the interiors of the slate cottages have an incomparable flair featuring clear design, warm colours and soft, natural fabrics.
Each of the 20 slate cottages has its own little garden on the slopes of the Mosel River, veritable 'box seats' for relaxation, with rose, fragrance or herb gardens that are accessible from the rooms at ground level.

Duravit's bathroom ranges Onto and DuraStyle by Matteo Thun in the bathrooms of these little holiday homes show that his “eco – non ego” philosophy also works with bathroom design: individual, straightforward and innovative. Sustainability is an essential part of Matteo Thun's creations, and he was also able to build the slate cottages in Longuich in accordance with the 'triple zero' principle: 0 km construction materials, 0 CO2, 0 waste.
